For the most part I agree with what you said (also taking into account the fact that this was written, for the most part I take it, pre-DUI). How the team deals both behind the scenes and publicly with the DUI will say alot about the character and commitment to excellence and integrety that I think I see from Heinneman. Whether that means Vermes stays or goes becasue of that, we'll se, but as in life itself, soccer does allow room for second chances. Overall I do believe that the team is headed in the right direction, and the mid-season slump (it seems like we have those every year and then have to claw back) is over. Playoffs are a realistic expectation, and I think the team can go far. Heck, the Red Bulls made it all the way to the cup final a couple years ago when they had no business even making it to the playoffs, and the Wizards are certainly a much better team than the Red Bulls were that year.

Thank you James. Only you and Mike Kuhn have actually approached this with the seriousness that it deserves. I've seen too many people die and get injured due to drunk drivers to condone his actions. Hillcrest and Gooch at the Star want to wait for the facts. Really? What facts? He was drunk, he drove, he committed a crime, he needs to be punished and made an example of.

BTW, do you think people would be so dismissive if we were on a losing streak? I don't. It's true what they say. Winning lets people forget everything.

I hope the league and at somepoint in time the Wizards discipline him, although it happened last week and nothing has been said. I wonder what approach he will take with the players... do as I say not as I do?

Thanks for the great comments.

I guess I would be more upset if there werent terrible and scary drivers out there everyday completely sober. I just kind of see this all as one of the numerous examples of risks you take anytime you get in the car. Do I want drunk drivers off the road? Well sure, but I also want many more off the road including: highschoolers, females under 21, people who cant see because their legs are too short making them sit 2 inches from the wheel, people that are to short to see completely out of their SUV, hummer drivers, people who text, and old people, just to name a few...

Although I'm going to wait and see how the story plays out - assuming that Vermes is innocent until proven guilty - this is certainly not a well-executed crisis management move by OnGoal and the Wizards PR staff.

One would think that they would have learned after the sexual harassment scandal that getting out in front of the story as much as possible is a good strategy.

Without knowing the full details - which given that the story breaks just before deadline on a Monday night doesn't exactly set high expectations - there are so many different avenues that the Wizards PR staff could have taken rather than allow this story to take control of the scheduled presser for the first homegrown player signing in club history.

Good stuff James. Greg and I were laughing during the game, because after Mike blew a gasket in the pregame tailgate, Greg jokingly predicted a Diop hattrick.

Not sure if it was a flash in the pan, or if Diop can do it again. But I enjoyed your perspective as always.

You know, I go to several different blogs and soccer websites for info, whether it be for the Wizards or just soccer in general. I come to your blog for a good read. I think anyone who went to the game Saturday had exactly the same reaction(s) you illustrated so well. The surprise and confusion of who wasn't in the lineup - and even more so - the shock and dismay of who was.

Anybody who says they weren't surprised by Diop in the starting XI, especially as a forward, is lying. Anyone who says they aren't thankful he was after the fact, is stupid.

Great game for Diop, and once again, another great article about the soccer experience here in Kansas City.

Btw, I think Theo Walcott was on the same page with Diop this week.

Yes, went into this game with no expectations and after hearing that diop was in, I really though that was the season for us, but that is one of the things that makes this sport so wonderful is games like that.

Hell, even if we lost the rest of this season I will still have more fond memories of 2010 than I did from 2009 with Man U and the Diop game alone.

Could it be that the S.C. would be Soccer Club rather than sporting club? Typically Sporting Clubs have multiple teams in multiple sports. While I hate RSL's name, Kansas City Soccer Club has a much better ring to it than Kansas City Wizards or Wiz.

The name of the sport is FOOTBALL We all know this. The other label needs to be phased out.

That being said, the Wizards should NOT rebrand. Leave everything as is.

Great insights into each player versus the team's need at Forward. Flexibility or adaptability is key to longevitiy in any league or successful team. Specialists may have a place, but are limited. That being said, if Zoltan or Wolff can provide more goals next year either in assist or target, then they are valuable. I would hate to lose their veteran knowledge as the young forwards continue to develop. The Bravo situation is tough. How does this change the team? Who moves out and who moves over? Kamara is in a strange situation with being the team leading scorer yet not having the best 'team' skills such as passing or effective runs. It will be very interesting to see what happens. Great article. Thanks

Great stuff! I know that Bravo is a welcome addition, but I have reservations about him being a target striker in the mls. The mls, unlike the Mexican league, has big strong, and rugged cb. That said, he will make the team much better. Like you, I see Kamara as an rouge striker. His runs are all about him, and he rarely makes an intelligent pass. Bunbury, will only get better, but his second touch sucks! Chhetri poses the same problem as Bravo, too small to play the target striker role. For me, the wild card is Wolff. Though he no longer has the tools of a prime striker, he is an intelligent player that can be used as an asset for this team. Vermes should consider having play the role of attacking mid.
